Two LES students harvesting lettuce from the hyrdoponics gardening system

Our LES students are turning hands-on learning into a fresh harvest! Through the school’s new Fork Farms Flex Farm hydroponic growing system, students recently harvested their first crop of lettuce as part of their STEAM learning experience.

Hydroponics gives students the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math in a real-world setting. As they care for their plants, students investigate plant growth, photosynthesis, nutrients, and environmental conditions while using technology to monitor and measure progress. They also apply engineering and problem-solving skills to understand how the system works and what plants need to thrive.

Beyond the science, the Flex Farm encourages conversations about sustainable agriculture, nutrition, gardening, and where our food comes from. Students are gaining valuable experience while seeing how classroom concepts connect to everyday life.

With hydroponic growing systems at both LES and LHS, LCPS is excited to continue providing students with meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of sustainability.

And it all starts with a little lettuce!
