5th graders shaking a bag to investigate how thermal energy transforms coffee creamer into ice cream

Science came to life for 5th grade students at Lancaster Elementary School as they explored thermal energy, mixtures, and solutions through hands-on experiments.

Students explored thermal energy by turning coffee creamer into ice cream. Through the experiment, students observed how thermal energy can transfer between materials and how that energy transfer can cause changes. Rather than simply learning about thermal energy from a textbook, students experienced the concept firsthand.

Students then investigated the difference between mixtures and solutions by making two familiar favorites: trail mix and lemonade. By combining ingredients and observing the results, students were able to see firsthand how mixtures and solutions are different.

These hands-on experiences gave students the opportunity to apply scientific concepts, make observations, and see how the science they are learning connects to the world around them.

At LES, sometimes the best way to learn science is to get a little messy, experiment, and see what happens!
