Lancaster High School students recently participated in the "Girl Power" program organized by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC), gaining valuable industry insights.
Students Heaven Carter, Carrington Fussell, Daniyah Reese, La’Nazja Thompson, Zariah Veney, and Danielle Wright engaged in hands-on activities, including pole climbing, operating bucket trucks, drone flying, and learning about roles in linework, engineering, and fiber broadband technology. These experiences introduced them to numerous career pathways they may not have previously considered. Additionally, industry professionals and motivational speakers shared their experiences, inspiring the students.
Students reflected after the event about the positive impacts. Carrington Fussell noted that participating in Girl Power broadened her perspective on potential career connections between the local cooperative and her future plans, including her interest in military service, highlighting potential opportunities after her service.
Danielle Wright expressed appreciation for the event, noting it helped her understand the variety of career options within the industry, from fieldwork to office roles, and she can see herself potentially pursuing an office position within a cooperative.
All students who attended enjoyed the day and said they would recommend the experience to their peers.
Lancaster County Public Schools is proud of our students’ participation in Girl Power and looks forward to supporting future events.
