The REAL Deal Health Careers Program was introduced to Lancaster High School students by senior nursing and paramedic students from Rappahannock Community College. This program provides high school students with an immersive experience that begins with a simulated pre-hospital scenario and progresses to a hospital setting. Through interactive skills stations, students will gain valuable insights into the collaborative and interprofessional nature of healthcare careers. This hands-on experience reflects the practical training that RCC offers to health science students, applying essential skills in real-world contexts.
Students also became more aware of the programs that RCC can offer to help them achieve their goals of a career in the healthcare industry.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Rappahannock Community College, the senior nursing and paramedic team, and Karen Hutchens for organizing this exceptional opportunity, which helps students explore to connect their passions to purposeful careers.

Join us for ECMC College Night on April 10th at LHS.

On March 27th, the Virginia Cooperative Extension-4H conducted the Reality Store program for 9th grade students at Lancaster High School. This interactive educational initiative aims to engage students in the complexities of financial decision-making.
Each student was assigned a random career, complete with a specified monthly salary before taxes and the educational qualifications required for that profession. Additionally, they were assigned a hypothetical family situation, some of which included dependents they needed to support with their monthly incomes.
As part of the exercise, students faced real-world financial decisions, such as paying taxes and other essential expenses. They interacted with volunteers stationed at various tables, who guided them in prioritizing their spending. For instance, students had to secure housing before they could purchase furniture. Other categories included groceries, education, entertainment, and childcare. Throughout the activity, students tracked their expenditures against their incomes, gaining insight into how factors such as salary, family size, and personal choices influence their economic circumstances. Many students were surprised to learn about the costs associated with their needs and wants and how these expenses affected their financial choices.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Ms. Tara Brent and Ms. Jasmine Greer for organizing this event, as well as to all the community volunteers who contributed to the success. Another thanks goes to the staff at LHS who worked to make this event possible.
Lancaster High School is proud to partner with the Virginia Cooperative Extension office to enhance students' understanding of financial literacy and the implications of their educational choices on their future economic decisions. It is partnerships such as these that help students link their passions with a purposeful career.

JaNae Avery is a senior at Lancaster High School currently enrolled in the Medical Assistant program at the Northern Neck Technical Center (NNTC). She developed an interest in the medical field while caring for her father during his illness, where she discovered her passion for helping others, inspiring her to pursue a career in healthcare.
JaNae emphasizes the daily opportunities for skill development provided by her courses, which enable her to connect classroom knowledge with future career applications. In her classes, she learns important competencies such as medication administration, understanding dosage calculations, patient intake, and performing EKGs. She notes that her high school mathematics courses have been particularly beneficial in helping her grasp the skills needed for medication administration.
JaNae encourages younger students to seize the opportunities available through high school programs, as they can equip them with valuable skills for their future careers. She advises, “Put your mind to what you want to do and never give up.”
JaNae plans to further her education at Old Dominion University, feeling well-prepared to embark on this next chapter. When asked about her career aspirations within the medical field, she expressed interest in pediatrics or labor and delivery. Her experience working in childcare at the YMCA has solidified her desire to work with children. After completing her studies, she envisions exploring opportunities beyond Lancaster, with Houston, Texas, as a potential destination, although she remains open to returning to her hometown later in life.
In her leisure time, JaNae enjoys seeking new experiences, such as traveling and trying new restaurants.
Lancaster High School takes pride in JaNae and her accomplishments within the Career & Technical Education program. We eagerly anticipate the promising future that lies ahead for her.

In 1991, the Virginia General Assembly designated the third Tuesday in March as Bank Day. On March 18, 2025, students from Lancaster High School had the opportunity to explore various career paths within the banking industry.
Students were graciously hosted by Blue Ridge Bank and Chesapeake Bank in Kilmarnock, Virginia. This event provided them with valuable insights into the essential roles that banks play within the community, as well as an overview of the diverse career opportunities available in the banking sector.
Lancaster County High School is appreciative of our community partnerships and values the collaboration with employees from Blue Ridge Bank and Chesapeake Bank. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Karen Hutchens, Lancaster High School Navigator (Rappahannock Community College) for helping students connect with this valuable opportunity.
Lancaster County Public Schools and our community partnerships help to connect students' passion with a purposeful career!
