Students with Learn to Serve Shirts getting ready to go out into the community and do community service.

Lancaster County Public Schools students turned National Service Day into a day of action, connection, and giving back to their community.

Friday, September 11, 2026, 320 LCPS students joined forces with 17 local organizations and Serve Virginia to celebrate National Service Day through hands-on community service. Together, students contributed approximately 900 hours of service across Lancaster County in a single day.

Throughout the day, students stepped outside of their traditional classrooms and into the community, working alongside local organizations and community members on a variety of service projects. Their efforts gave students an opportunity to use their time, talents, and skills to make a meaningful difference in the community they call home.

The partnership with Serve Virginia helped connect LCPS students with organizations throughout the community and provided an opportunity for students to experience the power of service firsthand.

For many students, the day was about more than completing service hours. It was an opportunity to understand that they have an important role to play in their community and that even a few hours of their time can create a lasting impact when people work together.

With 320 students, 17 community organizations, and 900 hours of service, National Service Day demonstrated what is possible when schools and communities come together with a shared commitment to service.

LCPS is proud of the students who showed up ready to serve and of the community partners who welcomed them. Their work is a powerful reminder that learning doesn't always happen inside the classroom, and that our students have the ability to make a difference right here in Lancaster County.
