It's great to start a new year! Expectations are always high at the beginning of a new journey, and they are equally so as we begin the journey into the 2017-18 school year.

This year we will continue to focus on improving student literacy. We have experienced amazing gains in literacy achievement for all of our students, from PK through 12th grade, and this has resulted in a significant improvement in student achievement in nearly all measured areas. We will continue to tailor literacy interventions for each and every one of our students to allow them to grow and to value literacy in their pursuit of life-long learning.

This year marks the inaugural year of implementing our Early College Academy. In partnership with Rappahannock Community College, and through the generosity of our community and the Lancaster County, Virginia Education Foundation, we will be expanding our dual enrollment offerings at Lancaster High School to allow and encourage more students to work toward achieving an Associate Degree prior to graduating from high school.

As we continue along the road of continuous improvement, I invite and encourage you to get involved. Contribute to the discussion concerning the updating of our school facilities; volunteer as a tutor with our volunteer tutor coordinator; spend a day reading to students at the Primary School; if you are a parent, read with your child, encourage his or her curiosity, and inspire him or her to be more than he or she ever thought possible! Our kids are terrific!

I appreciate your continued support of our students and our schools, and I welcome you to partner with us on this exciting journey to making LCPS a truly world-class learning organization!

All the best,

Steve Parker
