This is an Academic Update from LCPS:
As you are aware by order of the Governor, schools are closed for at least two weeks. During this time, we cannot require work or grade it. We can only provide opportunities for practice and enrichment. We have some unique challenges in providing equitable opportunities to all of our students to include opportunities for our students with disabilities. It is important to us to be sensitive to the needs of our county. Approximately 45 percent of our families do not have internet access let alone the high speed required for online learning, making an online learning platform impossible at this point. Some of our families who do have access may only have one device at home not allowing multiple kids to access online resources. Additionally, many of our children are now providing childcare as their parents are at work and they have multiple siblings or younger relatives at home. Our teachers prepared review packets last week that we plan to have available at the end of next week, as we anticipate this will be a longer event. We will be posting online resources for practice. We are currently working on a long – term solution and following guidance from the state. Please remember that we are in a state of emergency and safety continues to be our top priority. In the meantime, please take the opportunity to read with your children, engage them in creative ways and utilize online resources that are available. If you are a student at the Technical Center, we will have your work from there included in their packets. Finally, we are addressing this crisis differently than our surrounding counties because we have the highest age population in the state in our county. We are trying to minimize the possibilities of spreading this virus to our most vulnerable citizens by allowing people to socially distance themselves. Please be patient and know that we are working to address the educational needs of your children while we maintain appropriate social distancing. Again, safety of our children, staff, and community remains our top priority. More information will be coming later this week on work distribution. We will also be posting all messages on our website and school social media.
